💕 How It All Began

Girl+Gloss was born from real life, real challenges, and one powerful belief: confidence is built through repetition, words, and love.

When my daughter Janiya was born, our world changed forever.

She came into this world tiny but mighty — and right away, we learned she had Pierre Robin Syndrome, a rare condition that caused her jaw to be underdeveloped and made it hard for her to breathe and eat.

Doctors told us the road ahead would be full of challenges — that she might struggle to speak clearly, that her teeth wouldn’t develop properly, and that certain sounds might never come easily. There were surgeries, therapists, and moments that tested every ounce of courage I had as a mom.

But through it all, I watched my little girl fight, heal, and smile. And I realized something: real beauty isn’t what you see — it’s what you believe.

As she grew, I started thinking about what life might be like for her as she got older — especially when other kids might not understand her journey. Around that time, I saw a video of a young girl being bullied for her appearance. She was crying online, and her parents were trying to lift her up. My heart broke for her… and it made me think of my own daughter.

I remember asking myself, “What can I do now to make sure Janiya never doubts her beauty or worth?”

That’s when it hit me — I couldn’t just tell her she was beautiful. I needed to teach her to believe it.

So one day, while we were making lip gloss together at our kitchen table, I tore off a small piece of a sticky note, wrote “I am beautiful” on it, and placed it on her lip gloss tube. Each time she applied it, I had her say those words out loud. Before long, she started saying them on her own — and believing them.

That’s when it clicked for me: Repetition builds habits, and habits build belief.

From that spark, Girl + Gloss was born — not just as a brand, but as a movement to help moms empower their daughters to affirm themselves through daily affirmations and confidence-boosting moments — so they can rise above negativity, build unshakable confidence, and be the kind of girls who uplift other girls, too. 💗

What started as one simple affirmation — I am beautiful — grew into something so much bigger. We began labeling each gloss with affirmations like Brave & Beautiful, Cute & Confident, and Shine Bright to remind girls everywhere that their worth isn’t defined by others — it’s something they carry inside.

And when the world finally did show its unkind side — even from adults bullying Janiya on social media — she stood tall, unbothered, and confident in who she is.

Because when a girl knows her worth, she doesn’t just shine — she helps others shine, too.💄
